“Are we ready for a biomarker-only based diagnostic criterion for research in Alzheimer's Disease?”

Maria Glymour, ScD, MS, Professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UCSF School of Medicine, will present “Are we ready for a biomarker-only based diagnostic criterion for research in Alzheimer's Disease?”

Prof. Glymour's primary research focus is in social epidemiology, lifecourse determinants of cognitive aging and dementia, and improving quantitative research methods for causal inference in these domains. In her talk, she will focus on recent discussions of how to define Alzheimer's Disease.

A recently published research framework for diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease would allow diagnosis on the basis of two biomarkers (b-amyloid and pathologic tau), even among people with no objective or subjective memory or cognitive changes. This revision will have substantial implications for future Alzheimer’s research, and yet the field has not agreed on a systematic approach to evaluating whether the new criteria are improvements. 

Prof. Glymour will discuss considerations to evaluate any revision to diagnostic frameworks for Alzheimer’s disease and consider whether the currently proposed biomarker-only framework fulfills these goals.
